Notes: Near Ed by Ned is the 18th largest tree in Sequoia National Park and the 12th largest tree in Giant Forest. Naturalists Wendell D. Flint and Jerry Latham named the tree Near Ed by Ned because it stands near Ed by Ned (Near Ed by Ned is 162 ft (49 m) north of Ed by Ned), a pair of intertwined giant redwoods named by John and James Jordan in 1906, at the southern end of Round Meadow in Giant Forest.
The Altitude CAM film Sequoia National Park includes aerial footage of Near Ed by Ned (from 1:56-2:03 and 2:23-2:40) and Round Meadow.
Drive: Near Ed by Ned is 218 mi (351 km) southeast of San Francisco near Fresno.
Northbound: From U.S. Interstate 5 North, transfer to California State Route 99 North toward Bakersfield. Drive north 97 mi (156 km) on California State Route 99 and transfer to California State Route 198 East toward Visalia. Drive east 57 mi (92 km) on California State Route 198 (Generals Highway), past Four Guardsmen, and turn left into the Giant Forest Museum parking lot.
Southbound: From U.S. Interstate 5 South in Sacramento, transfer to U.S. Highway 50 East toward South Lake Tahoe. Drive east 1.7 mi (2.7 km) on U.S. Highway 50 and transfer to California State Highway 99 South. Near Fresno, transfer to California State Route 180 East. Drive east 56 mi (90 km) on California State Route 180, and turn right onto California State Route 198 West. Drive south 29 mi (47 km) on California State Route 198 (Generals Highway) and turn right into the Giant Forest Museum parking lot.
Hike: From the parking lot, hike east/downstairs to a kiosk at the trailhead. Turn left and hike east 0.3 mi (0.5 km) on an unnamed paved trail, past Clara Barton Tree, to the junction with Big Trees Trail near the southern end of Round Meadow. Turn left and hike north 0.1 mi (0.2 km) on the western half of Big Trees Trail loop, past Ed by Ned, to Near Ed by Ned which stands beside the trail on your left.
