Notes: Calaveras Big Trees State Park was established on July 5, 1931 after Calaveras Grove Association, Save the Redwoods League, and private donors (including John D. Rockefeller Jr. and Mrs. William H. Crocker) purchased North Grove from lumberman Robert P. Whiteside and others for $265,149.50. The park expanded on April 16, 1954 after Calaveras Grove Association and Save the Redwoods League purchased South Grove from Pickering Lumber Company for $2.8 million. Today, Calaveras Big Tree State Park spans more than 10 mi2 (26 km2) of terrain and contains 40 mi (64 km) of hiking trails. The park receives more than 200,000 visitors annually.

Drive: The Calaveras Big Trees State Park Visitor Center is located at 1170 E Hwy 4 in Arnold, California 120 mi (193 km) east of San Francisco.
From U.S. Interstate 5 in Stockton, transfer to California State Route 4 East. Drive east 74 mi (119 km) on California State Route 4 East to the entrance of Calaveras Big Trees State Park. Turn right onto Big Trees Parkway (also known as Walter W. Smith Memorial Parkway) and drive 0.1 mi (0.2 km) to the park entrance station (entrance fee required). Just past the park entrance station, turn right, drive 380 ft (115 m), and turn left into the visitor center parking lot.
