Notes: Super Colossus is an usual redwood with a large, fire-hollowed burl which engulfs two smaller redwood trunks. With the hollow burl included, Super Colossus ranks as the 2nd widest coast redwood.
Drive: Super Colossus is 263 mi (423 km) north of San Francisco near the community of Orick.
From U.S. Highway 101 just north of Orick take exit 753 Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway. Drive north 1.2 mi (1.9 km) on Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway to Prairie Creek Road. Turn left onto Prairie Creek Road and park near the Prairie Creek Visitor Center.
Hike: Super Colossus grows on the eastern side of Godwood Creek in George F. Volkmann Grove. Volkmann Grove is accessible via the old (unmarked and unmaintained) James Irvine Trail. To reach the old James Irvine Trail, hike northeast from the Prairie Creek Visitor Center, cross the bridge over Prairie Creek, and turn right/north at the second intersection onto West Ridge Trail. Near the Clinton L. Walker Grove bench, located where West Ridge Trail turns abruptly right/east at 41.36717 -124.02313, continue straight (beyond the bench) onto the old James Irvine Trail. Hike north 0.7 mi (1.1 km) on the old James Irvine Trail, past West Ridge Giant, James Irvine Giant, Godwood Creek Giant, Knotty Lady, Mutant Redwood, and Titanic Cathedral to the trail exit point near 41.37593 -124.03216. Turn left/west here and hike 60 ft (18 m) off-trail to Super Colossus.
