Notes: Godwood Creek Giant is the 24th largest coast redwood, the 7th tallest and 12th largest tree in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, and the tallest and 2nd largest tree in Clinton L. Walker Grove. Once 361 ft (110 m) tall, Godwood Creek Giant lost height when part of its dead top broke off in the late 1990's.
Godwood Creek Giant (1,295 AF points) was the unofficial (still unnominated) American Forests national champion coast redwood until naturalists discovered Juggernaut (1,359 AF Points) in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park on June 2, 2014.
Drive: Godwood Creek Giant is 262 mi (422 km) north of San Francisco near the community of Orick.
From U.S. Highway 101 just north of Orick take, exit 753 Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway. Drive north 1.2 mi (1.9 km) on Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway to Prairie Creek Road. Turn left onto Prairie Creek Road and park near the Prairie Creek Visitor Center.
Hike: Godwood Creek Giant grows on the eastern side of Godwood Creek in Clinton L. Walker Grove. Walker Grove is accessible via the old (unmarked and unmaintained) James Irvine Trail. To reach the old James Irvine Trail, hike northeast from the Prairie Creek Visitor Center, cross the bridge over Prairie Creek, and turn right/north at the second intersection onto West Ridge Trail. Near the Clinton L. Walker Grove bench, located where the West Ridge Trail turns abruptly right/east at 41.36717 -124.02313, continue straight (beyond the bench) onto the old James Irvine Trail. Hike north 850 ft (259 m) on the old James Irvine Trail, past James Irvine Giant, to Knotty Lady which grows on the right/east side of the trail. Turn around to see Godwood Creek Giant, about 70 ft (21 m) away, across the trail.
